Matthiesen aiming to rebound at Brands Hatch

Patrik Matthiesen will be looking to regain the championship lead as the British GT title fight enters the penultimate round at Brands Hatch. Patrik, alongside young British driver Callum Pointon, currently sit second in the standings after a seventh-place finish at Spa-Francorchamps two weeks ago. The HHC Motorsport pairing have led the way in terms of consistency during this campaign, finishing inside the points at every event to date, a feat achieved only by the Ginetta pairing. With no pit-stop success penalty to take into the weekend, Patrik will be targeting a return to the podium at a circuit where he has accumulated the most car racing starts.

Matthiesen will be looking for a change in fortunes after a tough weekend at Spa-Francorchamps where the track layout wasn’t best suited to the car. Nonetheless, Patrik and Callum improved their lap times throughout the weekend, before qualifying in a highly respectable sixth position. The team’s race pace was particularly impressive, with Patrik setting the fastest middle sector of any GT4 driver across the two-hour event. However, a penalty picked up during the first half of the race prevented any progress in the closing stages, with Matthiesen bringing the car home in seventh to collect nine vital points towards their championship challenge.

Brands Hatch is the venue for the penultimate round of the championship and will hold good memories for the HHC Motorsport team who have already taken a victory at this circuit earlier this year in the GT4 European Series. Once again, the event will consist of one two-hour race which gives the drivers a perfect opportunity to make progress during their stint, a format which has suited the HHC Motorsport pairing over the course of the season. The Brands Hatch Grand Prix layout features many high-speed corners which challenge the drivers to push to the limit. High tyre degradation could also be a factor this weekend with hot temperatures predicted, ensuring strategy will play a vital role in deciding the outcome of the race.

Patrik will be confident of a good result heading into the weekend with the Danish driver having previously competed in seven races at Brands Hatch, clocking up over 90 racing laps in the process. This experience, coupled with Callum’s multiple podium finishes at the circuit, give the team good encouragement heading into a crucial phase of the season. Brands Hatch is historically a race which features at least one safety car period, which could play into the hands of the HHC Motorsport pairing with their championship rivals all having to serve success penalties during the mandatory pitstop. This could help the team gain vital track position for the second half of the race at a circuit which can prove difficult to overtake at.

With just two races to go in this year’s British GT championship, Patrik will be aiming to overcome the deficit to title rival Jack Mitchell. Brands Hatch should provide the perfect opportunity to close the gap, with Patrik and Callum targeting their second victory of the season. Round eight of the championship will get underway at 13:40 local time on Sunday and is sure to provide plenty of action as the championship battles intensify.
